JICA's training program "Maritime Search and Rescue, Maritime Disaster Prevention and Marine Environment Protection" (Summary of results)

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG), under the framework of the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA), invited officials of overseas coast guard agencies to Japan from Sep 25 to Nov 3 to conduct the JICA's training program "Maritime Search and Rescue, Maritime Disaster Prevention and Marine Environment Protection" with aim of strengthening the maritime operational execution systems in the participating countries.

3. Action items
(1) Lectures by IMO and JCG staff on search and rescue, maritime disaster prevention and environmental conservation.
(2) Various analytical training by JCG Research Center.
(3) Visits to JCG related facilities and training with rescue equipment.
(4) Oil spill response training in Maritime Disaster Prevention Center.

4. Summary of results
This training program included lectures based on the IMO curriculum and practical training for oil spill response using oil fence or other oil prevention equipment. We also conduced training on transportation techniques and exercise in measuring the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of industrial water during tour of Japan Coast Guard-related facilities.

At the end of the training, the participants will formulate an action plan to address the issues in their own countries based on what they had learned in this training, which will be reflected to improve operations in their work in the rescue, environment, and disaster management fields in their countries.

The JCG will continue to contribute to the maintenance of international order and maritime peace and safety based on the rule of law by promoting capacity building support for coast guard agencies and deepening "ties" with them.
