Technical support on oil spill response for the Sri Lanka Coast Guard(Summary of results)

- Start of an Oil Spill Response Instructor Development Project -

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) supported a training course on oil spill response techniques for Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) officers at the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center (MDPC) from May 15 to 19, 2023, with the aim of improving the skills of instructor candidates of the SLCG.

1 The JCG supported SLCG officers in improving their job performance by supervising the implementation of the training course on oil spill response techniques at the MDPC.

2 The JCG has supported capacity-building by the SLCG in the field of oil spill response since 2014 under a JICA project, and a three-year plan initiated in July 2022 aims to "establish an organizational structure within the SLCG that enables continuous and independent training in oil spill response techniques".

3 After the training in Japan, the JCG plans to conduct online training and dispatch its officers to Sri Lanka for training in order to further enhance the effectiveness of the training.

4 The JCG will continue to cooperate with coast guard agencies of other countries to realize the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) initiative based on the rule of law. The JCG will also actively engage in contributing to developing coast guard agencies in the Indo-Pacific region.
