Technical support on oil spill response for the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (Summary of results) - Start of an Oil Spill Response Instructor Development Project -
The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) dispatched six experts to Sri Lanka to provide technical support on oil spill response to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) from Tuesday, January 31 to Saturday, February 18, 2023, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
1 JCG dispatched an expert team comprised of (2) Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT), (2) Marine Environment Protection and Disaster Prevention Division staff and (2) National Strike Team Station (NST) to provide technical
support on oil spill response from Tuesday, January 31 to Saturday, February 18, 2023.
2 This technical support was based on the JICA project named "Project for institutionalization support to establish an in-house advanced Oil Spill incident Management Training Program at Sri Lanka Coast Guard for Disaster
Mitigation and Marine Environment Protection". This is a third phase project that has been carried out since 2014. The third phase is focused on training for trainers so that SLCG can pass on the techniques and skills learned
through past projects on their own.
3 NST, the specialized oil spill response team instructors provided technical advice on effective teaching methods to the SLCG instructor candidates using patrol boats and equipment provided by Japan.
4 In addition, prior to the training, JCG provided two online training sessions in October and December last year, in order to increase the effectiveness of the training.
5 JCG will continue to cooperate with coast guard agencies in other countries to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) based on the rule of law. JCG will also engage actively in contributing to developing coast guard
agencies in the Indo-Pacific region.
