High-Speed Pursuit Training in Djibouti

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) dispatched three personnel including the Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT), a special team that provides foreign coast guard agencies with technical support on maritime safety and security, to the Republic of Djibouti from January 27 to February 11, 2023.

Participants from the Djibouti Coast Guard (DCG) used Rigid Hull Inflated Boats (RHIB) to intercept a suspected boat at high speed, stopped the boat, and then conducted onboard inspection repeatedly. This is the second RHIB training conducted for the DCG and the participants learned advanced boat maneuvering skills including quick turning at sea.

In the boarding and inspection training, participants went through a scenario-based training program developed based on the previous training in December 2022. The participants took the training seriously and enthusiastically. It has been well recognized that their knowledge and skills necessary to carry out their coast guard duties were improved.

The JCG will continue to support the DCG not only for maintaining security off the coast of Djibouti, but for contributing to ensuring the safety of maritime transportation for Japan.

Since 2013, as part of supporting the "Project for Capacity Development of the DCG" by JICA, the JCG has been dispatching personnel as short-term experts regularly. Currently, JCG has been providing mainly field operation training on maritime law enforcement and trainer development programs for the DCG.
