SAPPHIRE22 US-Japan Joint Training to PCG - We will continue our efforts to realize FOIP -

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) will dispatch five members of its Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT), a special team that provides foreign coast guard agencies with technical support on maritime safety and security, to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) from Oct 23 (Sun) to Nov 5 (Sat), 2022, under the framework of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This is the second US-Japan joint effort for foreign coast guards since the signing of the annex of the memorandum of cooperation between the JCG and the USCG on May 18, 2022.

During this deployment, the JCG MCT is going to conduct drills on towing and on-board boat launching using the 97-meter patrol vessels provided by Japan, and arresting techniques training. The USCG is going to provide training courses on boarding officer and damage control. Both US and Japan Coast Guard agencies will work together to implement these courses.

The USCG and JCG have been maintaining close relationship since the JCG's establishment in 1948, and have been strengthening the partnership and cooperation through various opportunities. Both agencies have been engaging in capacity-building support for foreign coast guard agencies in the Indo-Pacific region.

*US-Japan joint engagements are referred to as 'SAPPHIRE', and those to be implemented in 2022 are described as 'SAPPHIRE22'.
