Dispatch of the Mobile Cooperation Team to Vietnam

- Strengthen a cooperative relationship with the Vietnam Coast Guard-

22 August 2022

The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) dispatched four members of its Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT), a special team that provides foreign coast guard agencies with capacity building on maritime safety and security, to the Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) from August 14 to 20, 2022. This dispatch was under the framework of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The contents of the dispatch were lectures on drifting prediction, and lectures and practices on maritime law enforcement.

The lectures were about the use of drifting prediction for support and efficiency of search and rescue of maritime accidents, and for oil spill response in the ocean with case studies from the Japan Coast Guard.

In addition to the lecture on maritime law enforcement, the MCT conducted tabletop exercises of drug offence investigations and on-board inspection training on the ship.

The MCT exchanged opinions with VCG officials, and we discussed how the MCT could support the VCG in the future.

The JCG has supported the VCG based on the Memorandum of Cooperation between the JCG and the VCG signed in 2015. Under the influence of COVID-19, the JCG MCT has continued to provide assistance online. This time was the sixth dispatch since October 2019.

The JCG will continue to support foreign coast guard agencies to realize the Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
